History & Philosophy

Allegan Alternative High School is 25 years old!  It started as an offshoot of our Adult Education Program.  The original program had 2 teachers and met from 12 noon until 4:00pm.  It started with 25 students.  It now is a full time high school that is accredited by the North Central Association.  It has a full curriculum that includes a Vocational Education requirement that is met at our local Vocational Technical Education Center.  We have 7 teachers and 2 teacher's assistants that now service over 100 students from Allegan and other area high schools.

Throughout the years AAHS's mission has remained constant:  to give students another choice and another chance at completing their high school education.

AAHS's educational philosophy is based upon the idea of the student-as-worker.  This is why the School-to-Work approach is the heart of the the curriculum.  The main goal is to graduate students who can immediately enter the workforce possessing the employability, academic, and social skills needed to succeed.  Job shadowing, work co-ops, career days, leadership training, and community service are essential elements of the program.

The Key to AAHS's success is its "family" atmosphere.  Each student is part of the school community, which brings with it responsibilities and rewards.
