Mrs. Sarver - Hearing Impaired Classroom

Hi! My name is Karla Sarver, and I teach the Oral Program for the deaf and hard of hearing in Allegan County. Roseanne Madalinski is my wonderful Instructional Assistant! Together we service students across the county with hearing impairments.
We are an ACISD, program fortunate enough to be here at Dawson Elementary, where our students can attend specials and play at recess with their hearing peers.

In our class, children learn through listening and are encouraged to use their best speech and language. All students wear hearing aids, or have a cochlear implant. Students also use classroom assistive listening devices such as an FM auditory trainer (A signal is transmitted by an FM radio signal from the teacher’s microphone directly to the student’s hearing aid/cochlear implant.) and classroom soundfield system. Our students ARE able to hear; they are learning to listen.

Preschool students are taught the traditional preschool curriculum in addition to speech, language, and auditory lessons. The time elementary students are in my classroom is spent focused on speech, language, and auditory.

In addition to teaching the students, I believe it is equally important to teach parents how to best work with their child in developing speech, language, and auditory skills.
I am a graduate of Grand Valley State University where I majored in special education with an elementary education minor. My specialty areas include hearing impairments and early childhood education.

I live in Byron Center with my husband and two cats. My husband Jon works for the Careerline Tech center in Holland. In my spare time I lifeguard and teach swim lessons as well as enjoy swimming, being outdoors, and scrap booking/stamping.
