Mr. Beauregard & Mr.Van Farowe - 3rd Grade

Welcome to my classroom web page. This is my 19th year teaching third grade. Each class has its own personality. Not only have the students changed over the years, curriculum has changed, and so have I. My wife, Mary, and I met in college. At this point, we have four children: Ryan (18), Hannah (9), Evan (6), and Logan (3). In additionto my family, I am a devoted Tampa Bay  Buccaneer fan. ( http://buccaneers.com/default.aspx?skipintro=true ).

As a third grade student, I attended Edison Elementary in the the Kalamazoo Public Schools.  I graduated from Loy Norrix in 1982 and from Nazareth College in 1989.  I earned my BA in Education with a triple minor:  math, social science, and elementary education.  As a graduate, I attended Western Michigan University.  I earned my Master’s Degree in education.

I have been involved in soccer for 37 years.  I started playing before AYSO arrived in Michigan.  I played for Loy Norrix and Nazareth College.  I was the captain for both schools.  I earned several awards as a player.  Most notable, I was named to the NLCAA All-American team.  I played club soccer for the Kalamazoo Tornados (a team that I also coached).

I began coaching soccer when I was 14 and I continue to coach today.  Throughout my life, I have coach many good teams.  While coaching Plainwell High Schools women, we were State Finalist three times.  I coached two players that were name Player-of-the-Year for the MHSAA.  When I first began teaching in Allegan, I also coached AHS soccer. But, my most enjoyable coaching experience has been coaching Ryan, Hannah, and Evan with their teams.  It has been a great experience to not only coach Ryan, Hannah, and Evan, but to get to know their closest friends as well.  Ryan played for the Force Soccer Club (a club I designed in the 80’s) for 4 years, the Alliance F.C. for 2 years, and the Kingdom for 3 years.  Currently, he is a freshman at Marygrove College ( http://www.marygrovemustangs.com/article/21.php ).  He is playing soccer for Marygrove and plans to be a high school math teacher.  Hannah is in her 6th season of soccer (AYSO, Kingdom, and the Force).  This summer, Hannah was selected for the ODP (Olympic Development Pool) for Girls Under-10 in West Michigan.  Evan is in his 3rd year of AYSO. Logan is too young to be on a soccer team, but he enjoys going to the practices and games  with us.

Hannah was diagnosed with Diabetes on November 14 (2002).  This has been the most dramatic change in my life.  Insulin is a life savior.  You can read her story on Childrenwithdiabetes.com (http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/parents/d_03_1d9.htm).  Hannah has been featured in the Diabetic Cooking magazine (http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/parents/d_03_1de.htm) and the Kalamazoo Gazette.  In addition, her story was a part of a government book from the NIDDK that was presented to Congress.   Diabetes is a deadly disease.  To help find a cure, Hannah has raised over $6,000 for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Junior Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).   Hannah has been an Ambassador and awarded the “Top Youth Walker” three times.   She is able to give her own Insulin shots.  Hannah is an incredible little girl and has managed Diabetes better than I could have imagined.

In our spare time, we enjoy camping.  We like to visit zoos, amusement parks, and go downhill skiing.  We are members at John Ball Park Zoo.   We have had season passes for Cedar Fair (Michigan Adventure/ Cedar Point).  In one day, Ryan rode the Top Thrill Dragster 8 times (Mary and I rode it 4 times each).  This summer, Hannah rode all of the big roller coasters.  Evan loves the Frog Hopper and Woodstock’s Express.  Logan likes to ride the 'beep beep' motorcycles.  We have enjoyed family vacations to Florida, Hawaii, and Alaska.  Each trip was unique and awesome.  Last summer, we went back to Florida to see Mickey Mouse and Shamu.

In the end, I look forward to this being a great school year.  I love teaching.  As you can tell, I have been working with kids for 31 years.  Like any year, there will be challenges.  And like any other year, there will be successes.  I look forward to working through the challenges and enjoying the successes with this year's students.

Meet Mr. Van Farowe

Your child may have mentioned that there is a new face at Dawson Elementary.  My name is Ned Van Farowe and I am a student teacher in Mr. Beauregard’s 3rd grade class.  As a Grand Valley State University student I will be observing and participating in your child’s classroom activities.

After growing up in Canada and the state of North Dakota I graduated from Dordt College (Iowa) in 1989 with a BS in Agribusiness.  Following graduation I held jobs in business and social work, the bulk of my years were spent working with farmers throughout Michigan in a position with Hamilton Distributing Company.

As may be the case with some of you, I am now heading down a new career path; my goal is to become a special education teacher!  I’m the husband of Mary (also a teacher) and the father of four young children, two of whom we have adopted internationally.  When time allows, I enjoy spending time with my family, “playing” in our organic garden, cycling, and working on home improvement projects.

I’m looking forward to learning with your child this fall.  I hope to help them succeed in reaching their potential working along side the rest of Dawson’s Educational team!

If you need to contact me I can be reached at school between 7:30 am. and 4:00 pm.

Mr. V
