Allegan is a charter member of the Wolverine Conference which began
league competition in 1952. Other charter members included Otsego,
Plainwell, Portage, South Haven and Western State Normal (State High
in Kalamazoo). A contest to name the new league was held with State
High and South Haven both submitting the winning entry. Joseph
Mulready, principal at Allegan High School, was named the league's
first president with Dale Patterson of South Haven serving as the
league secretary. In that first year of league competition
(1952-53), champions were named in six sports. Allegan captured
league championships in football and track, while State High won
conference titles in baseball and tennis. The Tigers and Cubs were
co-champions in basketball. The results of the cross country season
have not been located as yet.
The first All-Sport Champion was named in the 1960-61 year and
was won by Kalamazoo -University High (formerly State High). Girls’
sports were added in the 1973-74 year with the league offering
competition in basketball, tennis, softball and track. Competitive
Cheer, the last sport added to the league state, began in the
1993-94 school year, while Girls’ Golf is set to debut in the fall
of 2008. Paw Paw, which had been a member from 1961-81, and
