Mathematics Classes

Basic Skills Math

Prerequisite:  Placement test to be given at the end of 8th grade.  Teacher recommendation.

Grade(s):  9                              Trimesters:  1                Credit:  ½

This course is designed to prepare students for algebra and geometry.  Math topics are combined in an integrated program.  The emphasis in this course is placed on basic skills and pre-algebra topics.  Upon successful completion of this course the student will receive elective credit only and not be granted credit toward the mathematics requirement.

Basic Algebra I (A & B)

Prerequisite:  Pre-algebra or equivalent

Grade(s):  9-12                          Trimesters:  2                Credit:  1

This course is the first part of a two year course in the fundamentals of algebra.  More time is given to the study of each topic.  Successful completion of Basic Algebra I A & B is equivalent to Algebra I A.

Basic Algebra I (C & D)

Prerequisite:  Basic Algebra I  A & B

Grade(s):  9-12                          Trimesters:  2                Credit:  1

Basic Algebra I C & D is the second part of a two year course in the fundamentals of algebra.  More time is given to the study of each topic.  Successful completion of Basic Algebra C & D is equivalent to Algebra I B.

Algebra I

Prerequisite:  Pre-algebra or equivalent

Grade(s):  9-12                          Trimesters:  2                Credit:  1

This course covers the basic language of algebra with a special emphasis on setting up and solving word problems.  Some additional topics covered include solving linear and quadratic equations, working with polynomials, and solving systems of equations.

Basic Geometry

Prerequisite:  Basic Algebra I A,B,C,D & Teacher Recommendation

Grade(s):  9-12                          Trimesters:  2                Credit:  1

Basic Geometry is a practical approach to mathematics that helps students find how geometry pertains to their lives and to the work place.  It includes such topics as plane geometry, basic algebra skills, probability, statistics and problem solving.  Formal proofs are not emphasized.

Geometry

Prerequisite:  Algebra I or Basic Algebra I A,B,C,D

Grade(s):  9-12                          Trimesters:  2                Credit:  1

Geometry is a course that emphasizes logical reasoning, including formal proofs, and problem solving in the study of plane and solid figures.  Geometry precedes Algebra II, but with special teacher permission, the two courses may be taken concurrently.

Algebra II

Prerequisite:  Geometry or Basic Geometry

Grade(s):  9-12                          Trimesters:  2                Credit:  1

This course covers such topics as series and sequences, direct and indirect variations, matrices, linear and quadratic equations, and functions.  The students will also learn to use the graphing calculator.  While Geometry is a prerequisite for Algebra II, the two courses, with special permission, may be taken concurrently.

Trigonometry

Prerequisite:  Algebra II

Grade(s):  10-12                        Trimesters:  1                Credit:  ½

Career core elective for:

Business Management, Marketing and Technology (P)

                        Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology (P)

                        Health Sciences (P)

                        Human Services (P)

This course is designed to provide the student with the proper trigonometric skills and understanding needed for success in further courses.  It will also demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of trigonometry in the world today.  The emphasis in this class is the study of trigonometric and circular function.

Probability and Statistics

Prerequisite:  Algebra II

Grade(s):  10-12                        Trimesters:  1                Credit:  ½

Career core elective for:

Business Management, Marketing and Technology (P)

                        Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology (P)

                        Health Sciences (P)

                        Human Services (P)

This course is intended for high school students who want a basic knowledge or probability and statistics.  The emphasis in this class is on data manipulations and representations.  It also covers topics on combinations, series and sequences.  The primary technological tool used is the TI-83 or 83 Plus.

Precalculus

Prerequisite:  Algebra II

Grade(s):  10-12            Trimesters:  2 (Opt. 3)      Credit:  1 (opt. 1 ½)

Career core elective for:

Business Management, Marketing and Technology (P)

                        Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology (P)

                        Health Sciences (P)

Precalculus is a course designed to prepare students for the study of higher mathematics by giving them the necessary algebraic, trigonometric,

and graphical analysis skills needed to be successful.  This course is of value to those students who plan to specialize in mathematics and science related fields.  This course could be taken for an optional third trimester named Precalculus C.

AP Calculus AB

Prerequisite:  PreCalculus

Grade(s):  11-12                        Trimesters:  3                Credit:  1 ½
