Art Classes

Design I

Prerequisite:  None                               

Grade(s):  9-12                                      Trimesters:  1                Credit:  ½

The purpose of this class is to introduce and build basic design concepts and skills.  Students will explore and create both two and three dimensional art using a variety of media.  Two-dimensional art will include drawing, painting and printmaking.  Three dimensional art will be limited and may include clay, paper mache and sculpture with manufactured and found objects.  Art history, criticism and aesthetics will be integrated into all projects and will be studied and practiced throughout the course.  Students at any ability level will learn how to manipulate a variety of media, think critically and express themselves in a creative way.

 

Design II

Prerequisite:  Design 1                          

Grade(s):  9-12                                      Trimesters:  1                Credit:  ½

The purpose of this class is to expand on design concepts and skills.  Students will explore and create both two and three dimensional art using a variety of media.  Design II students will practice advanced skills and techniques and be engaged in more criticism and analysis.  Two-dimensional art will include drawing, collage, painting and printmaking with various mediums.  Three-dimensional art may include clay, paper mache, basic jewelry techniques, mosaics and sculpture with manufactured and found objects.  Art history, criticism and aesthetics will be integrated into all projects and will be studied and practiced throughout the course.  Students at this level will learn how to manipulate a variety of media, think critically and express themselves in a creative way.

 

Advanced 2 & 3D Design

Prerequisite:  Design I & II        

Grade(s):  10-12                                    Trimesters:  2                Credit:  1

The purpose of this class is to expand on design concepts and skills developed in Design I and II.  Students will explore and create both two and three dimensional art using a variety of media.  Students will practice advanced skills and techniques and be engaged in more criticism, history and analysis.  Two-dimensional art will include oil painting, drawing, collage and printmaking with various mediums.  Three-dimensional art may include clay, paper mache, basic jewelry techniques, mosaics and sculpture with manufactured and found objects.  Art history, criticism and aesthetics will be integrated into all projects and will be studied and practiced through out the course.  Students at this level will learn how to manipulate a variety of media, think critically and express themselves in a creative way.  Student generated work needs to be original and well thought out.

 

Ceramics

Prerequisite:  Design I

Grade(s):  9-12              Trimesters:  1 (repeatable)         Credit:  ½

Career core elective for:

Procedures and processes unique to ceramics will be introduced.  Outcomes of the course will include skills in forming clay, developing the ability to make judgments about the aesthetic quality of ceramic forms and mastery of the core concepts.  Students will work using traditional hand building techniques and more contemporary methods such as extruding and wheelwork.
